Marble products are rapidly replacing wood products in a wide array of applications such as table tops, kitchen tops, etc. Tanzania is currently experiencing a boom in the stone extraction industry hence reducing the pace of deforestation in the country whereby most wood products are now being replaced by marble products.
Lets now take a photo tour of one of the many stone extraction and processing plants in Tanzania
Step one: Mountain clearing
In this stage, the mountain to be harvested is cleared of all the overburden soil so as to expose the desired marble rock.

Step two: Mountain slicing
In this second stage, the exposed marble rock is sliced up into square pieces whereby they will be chopped off for further processing. A special stone cutter with a gigantic disc blade does the job.

Step three: Chopping-off Marble cakes
Once the rock has been sliced up into cakes, the cakes are chopped off and removed from the mining pit and prepared for transportation to the processing plant.

Step six: Marble polishing
The slabs are then taken to the polishing stage whereby they are put through intense mechanical polishing so as to achieve a desired lustre. The finished slabs are then bundled up ready for the market. The slabs are mostly used as kitchen and counter tops.
