The American dollar is one of the most sophisticated paper currencies in the world, utilising some of the most advanced technologies the world has to offer in its production. The printing of the U.S dollar is done by the Bureau of engraving & printing under the U.S treasury with its facilities in Washington, D.C and Fort Worth, Texas. The two facilities deploy hightech processes in intricately designing and meticulously printing high quality and secure bank notes for the American public and the world.
The production of the U.S dollar involves a multitude of processes and sub-processes from the designing to the printing stage. Before money can be printed, the money papers need to be prepared first, the paper used in printing the U.S dollar is made from 75% cotton & 25% linen, hence giving it its classic look and feel.
During the design of the dollar, designers ensure that they portray a dignified image that coheres with the strength of the American economy while maintaining the classic look of the dollar, whilst at the same time incorporating the latest security features into the design.
Once the design has been approved by the treasury, it is engraved into a special plate by using a wide array of tools, methods and techniques. The plate is engraved with a web of fine lines and grooves that shall finally be used to press the design into money papers after ink has been applied into the engravings.
After the faces and backs of the money papers have been printed by the press machines, they are thoroughly inspected for any defects by using highly specilalised equipments. Once the quality has been approved, the papers are accurately cut and stacked into bundles ready to be rolled out to banks.
